Hey Cousin!
How are you feeling? Amazatastic, I hope!! ✨
Before we dive into our main topic—imposter syndrome—and explore how it's been challenging me recently, I want to hear your thoughts on the new look of our newsletter. Your feedback is invaluable. Now, let's discuss why and how imposter syndrome affects us, and what we can do about it.
AM I A FRAUD…!?
Imposter syndrome has been a tough opponent lately, whispering doubts and undermining my achievements. But why does it hit us so hard, especially when we're succeeding? Let’s unpack this together.
Yes, yall, a fraud, a hood swindler, a fake, a big FAT PHONY!
Well, at least that is what my inner critique is shouting at me right now. Tell me if you can relate to this. As new opportunities open up, I’m gaining clients, I’m co-hosting dope spaces, I’m growing as a person and as a business owner. I can see it.
However, the voice in my head keeps making me feel like I’m not ready. It makes me feel like “Who are YOU trying to fool?” I guess you would think that if all these good things were happening and growth was happening then why would I feel imposter syndrome?
I’ve been reading an amazballs book titled, “The Bad Bitch Business Bible” written by Lisa Carmen Wang. I got this book from the library (don’t sleep on your library).
It’s funny to read ‘bitch’ and ‘Bible’ in the same sentence.
Being a woman in business didn’t seem like that big of a thing. I’ve been an entrepreneur for almost seven years. But it wasn’t until this year that I learned these statistics when it comes to women in business.
As we discuss breaking free from imposter syndrome, it's crucial to understand the landscape we're navigating. Consider these startling statistics from Lisa Carmen Wang's 'The Bad Bitch Business Bible:
- In 2019, Forbes released its list of America’s Most Innovative Leaders, featuring 102 founders and CEOs. Only ONE… Yes ONE was a woman.
- Women comprise 40% of American MBA students but are still absent in more than 80% of business school cases.
- Less than 10% of bestselling business books are comprised of women.
- 84% of women feel uncomfortable promoting themselves.
- 69% of women prefer to downplay their accomplishments.
These figures aren't just numbers; they highlight the systemic challenges we face as women in business, emphasizing why feelings of fraudulence are so prevalent among us.
Women are counted out, left out, and forgotten more often than not.
I’m ready to change that for myself and for other women. I’m tired of feeling like a fraud. I’m tired of waiting on others to recognize me. I’m tired of not attracting the money that I deserve and want.
It’s time for you all to feel this way too.
We have spent so much time learning, so much energy building, so much money in our skills and careers.
We need to rewrite the narrative. Here are three ways we can start:
- Recognize Our Achievements: Let's make a habit of documenting our successes, no matter how small.
- Build Supportive Networks: Join or form groups where we can share our experiences and strategies for overcoming imposter syndrome.
- Engage in Professional Development: Boost your skills and confidence by participating in workshops and speaking opportunities.
All of this to say that we are conditioned to shrink ourselves.
Minimize our accomplishments and successes.
Let’s break free of this conditioning so we don’t have to suffer from imposter syndrome any longer.
Let's challenge the conditioning that encourages us to minimize ourselves. We are more than capable, and it’s time we recognize and celebrate our potential together.
